Orginally from the West part of this country (where I've lived the 20 first years of my life) I was not very much accustomed to accountering many foreigners (save those who spent their holidays in Britanny). I definitely moved to the East part, only 50 miles West of Switzerland, in 89, the year the Berlin wall fell symbolizing the opening of the gate towards the West for the whole eastern block. Was kind of cool to see trabans in the streets…
15 years later, Châlon being closer to the North-South axis, european backbone of transportations, and the road I use to go to work having a filling station dedicated to trucks, I see, every morning, drivers awakening in their cabins after they've spent the night there, away from their families, alone in a country where nobody could possibly understand them. Same situation when I go back home in the evening, some venturing to ask directions, a paper in the hands with just a few words in bad english (french would be a luxury). Less and less german or dutch, I can only guess now where those modern slaves are from: Hungary, Poland, Czecoslovakia, Romania…
