changing mind

It's a pitty I rented the video 3, 4 days ago and waited until today to actualy view it.

I can't even watch it entirely, it's almost bed time… So I bookmarded what seemed to be the real start (what? a good ten minutes after first credits… weird).

I think I'll like it. I need to change my mind so this one peculiar movie came at the right time.

shortcuts

I guess it is rather symptomatic of nowadays society: most if not all companies direct any caller to a machine…

It is also characteristic of the human species to find shortcuts and go round such obstacles. For what it may be worth (and because I'm also using this journal as a database to record anything useful) here's a link to get through to a human being whenever one calls American express, Wal Mart credit card or Bank of America to name a few… http://gethuman.com/us/

brother

The more I talk with my brother the more I have the feeling I'm talking to a stranger.

I'm not 'family' oriented but in this case, between my brother and me, the relationship is getting so thin I have the feeling when Mum dies (if she ever does before any of us that is) my … obligations (can't think of any better word) will die too.

He called me up the other day, yesterday as a matter of fact, just to know how things were regarding my application for a job in Finland. I felt Mum and he had a discussion over me probably minutes before (It's Finland people not the Moon. Besides it's far from done yet).

Any discussion I have with brother always turns into a I'm-right-you're-wrong game (me being wrong of course). This time, after the 'Finnish episode' (2 minutes) we ended up discussing ripping CDs and DVDs and downloading like crazy which he does a lot and me, maybe ten singles last year.

We couldn't disagree more. Knowing how this discussion would unfold I didn't let him move one bit from the main subject. I know his technics: finding the one weak argument no matter how remote from the main subject it can be and use it as a reason to question the relevance of the whole discussion structure.

It's so happened this PC crashed and so did my Skype connection. After, what, 1 good hour chat I didn't feel like calling back. He did (always does, I never call) just to let me know I didn't offer any alternatives blablablablabla.

Does he love me?

Seriously! I can't say whether he loves me as I'm said all brothers love their siblings.

Honestly, I don't love him, I barely like him. I don't care about him.

Fun fair

No accident of any kind… *sigh* THAT would have been fun.

So, I spotted a potential victim and remarked this plumpy one.

I giggled all the time she rode that … thing. I one point I think she even called her mama LOL

But she didn't fall or fly or attempt to do anything silly.

Much to my disappointment. ^_^

Address unknown

I was somehow apprehensive about reading the book JPB had advised us to read: address unknown. I was wrong… and right at the same time.

I literally 'swallowed' it in less than one hour; couldn't actually let it go before going to bed.

It took me two, three letters (the book consists of about twenty of them) to understand what ceased to be a mere correspondence to become a plot. It's rather disturbing and riveting and cold and calculated.

My turn to warmly recommend the book.

Asian backstreet boys

It's going to be really tough for the backstreet boys. Another competitor from Asia.

free speech

Although there are a number of good points in the IHT article I read this morning (an mentionned later in Pascal Riche and Laurent Mauriac's blog) I must admit there is a limit beyond which I'm having a hard time accepting other people's right to express themselves.

I find it shocking that people dare wearing armbands showing a svastika.

429389

I was getting tired of seeing my little tree (which name I don't know – could be a japanes cherry tree but I'm not sure) slowly but surely dying before my eyes.

It is staying in the bathroom which is all white and very clear thanks to a one glass 1.75mX50cm window. It is clear for my eyes, I just don't know if there's enough, if at all, of the particular wavelengths plants and trees grow upon…

Besides, there is some kind of a constant cold draft there because of the air exhaust in the main entrance door that's just next to the bathroom…

I dipped the little tree in the kitchen sink all night long, added a drop of KB fertilizers to the water and, this morning, trimmed my green friend so as to get rid of any leaf or branch that looked yellow and dead.

Statistically, it seems that one out of two plants I buy die on me. There might be relevant reasons for that: a – plants adapt quicker than others to a new environment (this place is not exactly a green house)
b – this is still winter season but temperatures are kept fairly warm and humidity is rather low
c – It took and still does take me some time to adjust to each plant needs; some may die before I understand how frequently they need watering.

Takes patience…

claustrophobia

I'm due to spend two days, in two weeks time, along with a colleague, in the workshop (*).

As I was wrapping up matters before the weekend (and avoid, if possible, any glitch that inevitably would end up on my desk next Monday) I spotted LP, in white overall, about to perform some inspection inside a steam generator.

– How do you actually get inside?
– Through manways,…
he then showed me what those were.

LP is a good 40lbs heavier than I.

– I'll show you.

He really had to push and pull himself inside.

– Your turn.

Honestly I tried, but just couldn't get passed the shoulders. Both were rubbing against the ring. That was enough a signal, I had to back off.
LP showed me, from where I was standing, with a torch lamp, what he was then meant to do: crawl inside tubes and proceed to surface inspection…

If my life depended upon it, I'd actually have to think a very long time.

*:about time, after two years – about the same time it took to set up a 2 hours conference about cultural differences between us and Finnish people…
