Some of the comments Elisa wrote following the presentation that didn’t go well last Tuesday are still vivid in my memory.
Some of the things she gave me as feedback make sense, like [...]Presentation should be translated in to common language. Long, complicated sentences and flamboyant words are unnecessary. They may be used on the power point slides, but they should be “spoken out” (in a) more common way.[...] True, no problem with that. She might not know I already proceeded to many cuts but I’m all willing to continue in that direction if this improves the presentation.
… though ‘Flamboyant’ ?!
Or [...]Since the level one is for everyone, there’s no need to tell all different standards etc. because they simply do not tell anything to most people. They just wonder “What…?”.[...] True again; the presentation for level I is just the whole package cut in half whereas it should have been a totally different presentation without references to norms and standards. It also implied more time to it.
[...]I know you tried to make the training more lively with that type of power point but to me it looked like something teenage boys do after they learn to use powerpoint: every trick available is used in one presentation. And it doesn’t help, it’s simply annoying.[...]
This bugged me and continues to do so. Afterward I suggest she jumped into it and came with modification since [...] got nothing out of that training. [...] and since as she insisted she [...] stud(ies) business communication so (she’s) quite picky when it comes to presentations etc.[...]
The clock is now ticking. I gave her one month (when it took me nearly 2, but she has my work to start from) and set up a reminder to go off in 2 weeks. It’s a win-win situation: if she does indeed add improvements without resorting to simply cutting so much as reformulating we will all benefit from it. I as well as her.
All this, I realize, because she chose to sneer and criticize instead of coming to me afterward and proposed to help improve the presentation.
After one month and a half of having rather heavily spent time working on a presentation under Powerpoint©™ I can say I fairly well master it.
